Perhaps the easiest to grow and most prolific edible flower of all time, calendula is always beautiful but Remembrance Mix is gorgeous. We love to toss these petals on salads, cakes and gazpacho all summer – and even on winter salads as calendula is cold hardy (and drought resilient) too!
What’s in a name? For years we’ve been collaborating with Nathaniel of Remembrance Farm in Trumansburg, increasing the color and petal abundance in his calendula so he can add vivid, delicious diversity to his signature “Flower Power” salad mix.
When to sow: Direct Seed (recommended), 2-3 weeks before/after last frost, sow 3 seeds every foot. Or Transplant 4 weeks before last frost, sowing 2 seeds per cell, thinning when true leaves appear. Harden off and transplant outside around last frost.

Sun/Part Shade Plant spacing after thinning: 1 foot
Days to Flower:55-60 Height: 24 inches
Harvest: Know that all calendula varieties are rowdy self-sowers, quickly becoming carpets of calendula when let go to seed; harvesting flowers and/or seeds frequently will maintain the balance beautifully.

Oh, this calendula variety is total magic. I direct sowed the seeds outside per the guide in one of our beds about 3 weeks before final frost (zone 5a) this last season, and it took about 75 days to begin flowering (mid July ish), but once they did, they didn’t stop until NOVEMBER, after multiple hard frosts. The variety & vitality of these beauties is just astonishing. I will forever be growing this calendula now 🙂
