Ohhhh these zinnias! Their raucous, Jackson Pollack-approved diversity hums with pollinators loving Candy Cane’s impressive blooms unapologetically expressing themselves all summer long. We do, too! Their soft petals unfurl peach, raspberry, cream, tangerine and so much between and beyond in fluorescent spectrums as well as soft pastel. Just like each of us, no two Candy Cane plants are quite the same! And just like us, this brings more richness, beauty and resilience to our individual and collective lives.
Like all zinnias, Candy Cane thrives in gardens as well as raised beds and containers & so generously: the more you harvest, the more they bloom.
Transplant (recommended): Sow indoors 4 weeks before last frost, keeping soil surface moist until emergence. At Fruition we sow in soil blocks, and a heat mat will help maintain an accurate temperature. When seedlings have true leaves, transplant into larger containers (avoid plants becoming root bound).
Sowing Date: Indoors ~4 weeks before last frost
Seed Depth: 1/4 inch Days to Germination: 3-5 at 80-85°F
Transplanting date: After frost danger has passed
Plant spacing: 9-12 inches Full Sun
Days to Flower: 60-70 Height: 2-3 feet
Harvesting: To see if a zinnia is at peak harvest for cutting, gently shake the stem from about eight inches below the bloom. If the stem bends even slightly, it’s not quite ready. Once the stem is stiff, harvest! We find zinnias last well over one week in a vase and often two, especially when kept out of direct sunlight.
