We love leeks all summer but autumn is when we fall hard for their deeply savory, aromatic sweetness. Tadorna Leek thrives all season and is more cold-hardy than most, so she is our go-to for fall leeks, especially. At Fruition, we sow our first leeks indoors in March, sowing more each month through early August to surround ourselves with delectable abundance all season. Transplanting as well as mulching deeply with straw, leaves or grass clippings increases the white, sweet stem that we love so well.

Such an amazingly delicious, resilient leek! This year was my first year ever growing leeks, and we started them inside (multisown in soil blocks) in late March (zone 5a) and planted them out in our raised beds about a month or so later next to chard & beets and loads of flowers. They haven’t even flinched at the excess rainfall we have had this year and we didn’t have any pest or disease issues. We had quite a good yield from the multisowing method, with groups of 2-3 leeks per planting hole. So incredibly delicious and sweet when caramelized slowly like onions! I can’t wait to grow even more next year.
