Within & Without Market: In Praise of Plurality

Can you imagine a carrot declaring it’s way is ‘the’ way?

This bean feeling it is the ‘right’ bean?

This sunshine declaring itself the ‘only’ sunshine?

Is a prairie so much better than the tundra?

One seed more sacred than another?

As Fruition transforms from selling and shipping seeds to sharing seeds as gifts (note: the gift is not free, let’s talk more about this soon), we respect and celebrate the many ways we all are remembering and reimagining what might be possible beyond market economy. And ohhhhh yes: this includes every single one of us doing everything we can to simply survive within market economy. Which is us all.

Friends, as we endeavor to shift our own actions to more deeply align and explore our deepest values, we do not claim to be right, better or in any way morally superior to any other approach:

We believe in a deliciously pluralistic food & seed sovereign future where each community has the freedom to self-determination, celebrating adaptive spirit as we learn to express and deepen our individual and collective values.

Can you feel this world, just beneath our current world, emerging as we breathe?

Even as we feel our current market-driven empire crumbling, I feel the call so deep in my bones, fear cloaking many other emotions:

The market tells us there is only one way.

And Friends, this much we know:

You, reading this, are surviving.

Somehow, in this system, against all the odds.

What are you doing to nourish your wellspring of resilience and resistance? Intentionally? Unintentionally?

Even pausing to listen, to read these words and feel your feelings throughout your soft body, is this deep presence making you more alive. Even deep in market economy, (y)our breath is evidence of a world beyond that we are dreaming and seeding together.

Beloved growers of seeds, gardens and new worlds:

Thank you for nourishing these life forces deep in you, surrounding us all.

Trust you are enough — whoever you are, wherever you are — and we celebrate your unique path, grateful to cultivate futures so present, together, however distant.

Let us adapt as nimbly as the plants we love, surrounding and encouraging us to grow…

…and to gently, gratefully compost what we no longer need, in ourselves and in the world…

…in service of wholeness we all yearn for even as it’s all around us.

Thanks for witnessing our exploration of becoming and trust we support you exploring your own in all the ways you do and may yet…

…you radiant seed of the universe, you!

Thank you.

  1. Dear Petra and Matthew I am excited for your transition. I turn 70 this summer and am happy to share that I have saved seed, started seed and shared plants for most my adult life. Giving has always been my action. I termed a quote years ago. “Teaching a skill is a lifelong gift, be generous.” I have taught several thousand people how to save seeds through a seed group I started. It has been joyful to teach that skill to so many. I became ill and had to retire from my seed teaching, but I still manage to reach a few folks each year since retiring. Being able to give to others is truly giving from the heart-it gives back exponentially! Others always asked why I didn’t ask for payment, watching the faces of those I taught was all the payment I could ever ask for. This journey you embark upon will be heartfelt and resplendent, your lives will never be the same. Love, Dayna McDaniel

    1. Thank you Dayna for the ways you have shown up for your community and your affirmation. It is all we could ever hope for.
