Bursting with gold, saffron and crimson blooms, we adore this vividly vivacious zinnia! Shorter than the classic zinnia, each robust 2 to 3-foot plant is covered in extraordinary 2-inch pom-pom style double blooms on long, strong stems that hold up well in summer heat and rain, making Persian Carpet perfect for cut flowers. These photos are from my sister’s wedding bouquets!
Zinnias thrive in gardens as well as raised beds and containers & the more you harvest, the more they bloom.
Transplant (recommended): Sow indoors 4 weeks before last frost, keeping soil surface moist until emergence. At Fruition we sow in soil blocks, and a heat mat will help maintain an accurate temperature. When seedlings have true leaves, transplant into larger containers (avoid plants becoming root bound).
Sowing Date: Indoors ~4 weeks before last frost
Seed Depth: 1/4 inch Days to Germination: 3-5 at 80-85°F
Transplanting date: After frost danger has passed
Plant spacing: 9-12 inches Full Sun
Days to Flower: ~55 Height: 2-3 feet
Harvesting: To see if a zinnia is at peak harvest for cutting, gently shake the stem from about eight inches below the bloom. If the stem bends even slightly, it’s not quite ready. Once the stem is stiff, harvest! We find zinnias last well over one week in a vase and often two, especially when kept out of direct sunlight.
