Friends, rather than selling and shipping seeds, we now share seeds as an embodied gift practice. Learn how to receive seeds from us & here are our FAQs.
We have always been fond of eating our weeds, but friends this is not your average weed: succulent and lemony with the most Omega-3’s of any vegetable, purslane was a favorite green of both Gandhi and Thoreau. Golden Purslane grows 18 inches upright while its ancestral garden weed crawls prostrate along the ground, making abundant harvests easier to clean. In the kitchen we mostly enjoy the leaves in salads but once the plant begins to flower we harvest the entire stalk and blanch the leaves for a pasta alternative that perfectly coincides with the first tomato harvest.
Planting Method: Direct sow or transplant
To Direct Sow: After last frost, sow 1inch apart. Thin to 6-8 inches apart and enjoy the thinnings!
For Transplanting: 3 weeks before last frost, sow 2 seeds per cell indoors and thin to 1. Transplant after last frost with spacings above, taking care to not damage roots.
Seed Depth: 1/8 inch Days to Germination: 4-7
Sun Needs: Full/Part
Spacing (after thinning/transplanting): 8 inches
Days to Harvest: 50 Height: 2 feet
Harvest: Harvest any time within 4″ of the base. Flavor best before flower. In order to preserve purslane’s juiciness, harvest in the morning or evening. Collect the most tender tips and side shoots while keeping them whole.
